What Are Safety Data Sheets?

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a standardized document that provides comprehensive information about a product's physical and chemical properties, potential hazards, safe handling practices, emergency response procedures, and regulatory status. The SDS format used across this page follows the 16-section structure required by OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom 2012), which aligns with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), Revision 9.

Legal Basis

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200 (Hazard Communication Standard) requires SDS documents for hazardous chemicals. Our organic and physical garden products are prepared in SDS format for full consumer transparency, whether or not a product meets the strict definition of a hazardous chemical under OSHA.

16-Section Structure

Each SDS is organized into 16 standardized sections covering: identification, hazard classification, composition, first-aid measures, firefighting, accidental release, handling and storage, exposure controls, physical and chemical properties, stability, toxicology, ecological info, disposal, transport, regulatory status, and other relevant information.

Hazard Information by Product Type

While none of our products are classified as hazardous chemicals under OSHA HazCom 2012, we provide the following product-specific hazard information so that our customers can make fully informed decisions about purchase, handling, and storage.

Worm Castings — Inhalation

Worm castings are a granular organic material. In dry conditions, fine dust particles may become airborne during pouring or mixing. Prolonged inhalation of organic dust is not recommended. Users who are handling large quantities in enclosed or dry, windy environments should wear an N95 dust mask or equivalent respirator as a precaution.

Worm Castings — Skin & Eye

Worm castings are not a skin or eye irritant under normal conditions. Incidental skin contact requires only routine handwashing. If worm castings come into contact with eyes, flush with clean water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention if irritation persists. Gloves are recommended for extended handling sessions, particularly for users with sensitive skin.

Worm Castings — Ingestion

Worm castings are not intended for human or animal consumption. They are a soil amendment derived from composted organic material and may contain naturally occurring bacteria, fungi, and trace minerals. If accidentally ingested in small amounts, wash the mouth with water and contact a healthcare provider. For large ingestion, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Garden Beds — Assembly

Raised garden bed kits include metal panels, fasteners, and hardware with sharp edges. Use heavy-duty work gloves during assembly to prevent cuts. Edges should be deburred or covered per manufacturer instructions. Keep children away from the assembly area. Wear safety glasses when driving stakes or fasteners with force.

Shade Cloths — UV & Heat

Shade cloths are UV-stabilized but not fireproof. Do not expose shade cloths to open flames or place near heat sources such as outdoor grills or fire pits. Extended exposure to temperatures above 140°C (284°F) may cause the HDPE fabric to deform or melt. Do not cut or burn shade cloth in enclosed spaces, as heated synthetic fibers may release irritant fumes.

Trellises — Physical Hazards

Wire trellises and garden supports present puncture and laceration risks during installation and removal. Always use puncture-resistant gloves when handling wire mesh or pointed stake supports. Ensure trellis structures are properly anchored to prevent tipping. Metal trellises with damaged coatings may expose bare metal, which can cause rust staining or minor cuts on contact.

All Products — Environmental

Organic worm castings are environmentally beneficial and biodegradable. Do not dispose of large quantities into waterways or storm drains. Hardware and plastic garden products should be disposed of through local recycling programs. Coated metal and plastic components are not suitable for composting. Contact your local waste management authority for disposal guidance on specific materials.

Children & Pet Safety

Keep all garden products out of reach of young children and pets. Children may be attracted to soil-like materials and should be supervised during gardening activities. Ensure worm castings are stored in sealed bags away from food preparation areas. Sharp hardware components such as trellis stakes and garden bed fasteners pose injury risks to children and should be stored securely when not in use.

U.S. Poison Control Center

For any accidental ingestion or exposure emergency involving any of our products, contact the American Association of Poison Control Centers at 1-800-222-1222 (24 hours / 7 days a week). In the event of a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.

First-Aid Measures (GHS Section 4)

The following first-aid measures apply to all products sold by Rdy2Gro Soil Systems. These procedures are consistent with GHS SDS Section 4 guidance and are provided for both consumer and workplace use. If in doubt, always seek professional medical advice.

1

Eye Contact

Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Immediately flush eyes with large amounts of clean, lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes, holding eyelids open. If irritation, redness, or pain persists after flushing, seek medical attention. Do not rub eyes. This applies to all products: soil, metal dust, or plastic particles.

2

Skin Contact

Remove contaminated clothing if applicable. Wash affected skin thoroughly with soap and water for at least 5 minutes. For cuts from sharp hardware components, clean the wound, apply a sterile dressing, and seek medical attention if the cut is deep or bleeding does not stop. Wash hands after any garden product handling, even without visible soiling.

3

Inhalation

Move the affected person to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, provide supplemental oxygen if available and trained to do so. If the person is not breathing, perform CPR and call 911. For dust inhalation from worm castings, remove to fresh air, rest, and allow the airways to clear. Seek medical attention if coughing or chest discomfort persists.

4

Ingestion

Do not induce vomiting unless directed by a medical professional or Poison Control. Rinse the mouth thoroughly with water. Call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 immediately and follow their instructions. If the person is unconscious or having difficulty breathing, call 911. Bring the product container or packaging to the medical facility if possible.

5

Cuts & Punctures (Hardware)

For cuts or punctures from metal garden bed panels, trellis wire, or other hardware: rinse the wound with clean water, apply pressure with a clean cloth to stop bleeding, clean with antiseptic, and cover with a sterile bandage. Seek medical attention for deep puncture wounds. Ensure tetanus immunization is up to date if a deep metal puncture occurs.

6

Seek Medical Attention If

Always seek professional medical attention if: symptoms persist after initial first aid, the quantity of ingestion was significant, a wound is deep or shows signs of infection, an eye injury is suspected, a person experiences difficulty breathing or chest pain, or you are uncertain about the severity of an exposure event. Do not self-diagnose serious exposures.

Medical Note for Healthcare Providers: Our organic worm castings are a vermicompost product containing humus, microbial biomass, and naturally occurring trace minerals including lead, cadmium, and arsenic at low concentrations. Hardware products may contain steel, zinc-coated or powder-coated metal, and polymer components. No components are classified as acutely toxic under OSHA HazCom 2012. For treatment guidance, contact U.S. Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Safe Handling, Storage & Disposal

The following guidance covers GHS SDS Section 7 (Handling and Storage) and Section 13 (Disposal) for all product categories sold by Rdy2Gro Soil Systems. Customers and commercial users should follow these guidelines at all times.

Worm Castings — Handling

  • Wear gloves and a dust mask (N95 or equivalent) when handling large quantities or in dry, enclosed spaces.
  • Avoid creating airborne dust. Wet the surface lightly before disturbing large amounts if conditions are very dry.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling. Wash hands thoroughly before eating or touching your face.
  • Apply at recommended rates. Do not over-apply to planting areas where runoff could enter waterways.
  • Intended for outdoor garden use. Do not use as a substrate for human food preparation surfaces.

Worm Castings — Storage

  • Store in original sealed bag or an airtight container in a cool, dry location (ideally 40–80°F / 4–27°C).
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can degrade biological activity in the castings.
  • Do not store in areas where children or pets can access the product unsupervised.
  • Keep away from food storage areas and water supply lines.
  • Do not mix with bleach or strong chemical fertilizers in the same container; this may alter microbial content and produce undesirable reactions.

Hardware & Structures — Handling

  • Wear heavy-duty gloves when handling metal panels, wire trellis systems, or fasteners to protect against cuts and abrasions.
  • Wear safety glasses when driving stakes into hard ground or using mechanical fasteners under pressure.
  • Do not use garden structures for purposes other than their intended garden use (e.g., as structural supports for buildings or play equipment).
  • Inspect products before each use for damaged coatings, rust, or sharp deformities. Replace damaged components promptly.
  • Keep assembly hardware (screws, pins, fasteners) away from children who may ingest them.

Shade Cloths — Handling & Storage

  • Do not use shade cloths near open flames, outdoor heaters, or heat-emitting equipment.
  • Do not burn or cut shade cloth indoors; heated polyethylene can release fumes that irritate the respiratory tract.
  • Store folded shade cloths in a cool, dry location away from UV exposure when not in use to preserve material integrity.
  • Inspect for fraying or tears before installation to prevent entanglement hazards for birds and small animals.
  • Do not allow children to use shade cloths as a play covering or wrapping material.

Disposal — All Products

  • Worm Castings: Compostable and biodegradable. May be applied directly to garden soil, composted, or disposed of with organic yard waste per local guidelines.
